Running back Toby Gerhart gave his Heisman candidacy one final boost in Stanford’s final game of the regular season, leading the team to a 45-38 victory over visiting Notre Dame. Gerhart tallied 212 yards and three touchdowns rushing, caught a pass for 33 yards, and threw an 18-yard touchdown pass on 4th down–totaling 263 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Notre Dame’s Jimmy Clausen also put on a showcase, throwing for 340 yards and 5 touchdowns, but his final toss into the end zone fell incomplete as time ran out.
With this victory, Stanford finishes the season with a record of 8-4, and Notre Dame falls to 6-6.
Other Pac-10 action featured area rivalries galore: Arizona claimed state supremacy with a 20-17 victory over Arizona State; Washington blanked Washington State 30-0; and USC currently holds a 7-0 lead over UCLA at halftime.
