What’s the Best Way to Respond to the Hillel Protesters?

Shirley-Phelps-Roper.jpgAs Wyndam reported earlier, the Westboro Baptist Church is scheduled to hold a protest at Hillel. (Of course, their repertoire is not complete without plenty of hatred towards gays, the military, and a whole other set of groups besides the Jews).
Many people, myself included, agree that they are entitled to their free speech (and are also unsure of why their marketing guru told them to come to Stanford). In any event, it seems like they are going to show up, and probably with more force than your standard White Plaza crazies.
The best way to respond to this big protest, though, is unclear–assuming you disagree with the what is being said, you want to send a message that you disagree with them yet you don’t want to give worth to their actions by acknowledging that they’re even there.
In an email, Jewish Student Association president Joe Gettinger declared that there would be a counter-protest–or rather, a pro-tolerance protest–simultaneously on the Hillel Lawn:
When hate comes to your door, you do not respond by turning a blind eye, and you do not respond in hate, but as you suggest, you counter their messages of hate with positive messages of tolerance…It will be on the Hillel lawn, but it will not be a counter protest. It will be a proactive rally of tolerance, with our backs to those who would blast us with hate.
Gettinger also forwarded this video of Rutgers’ protest against Westboro Church, with very relevant Matisyahu background music:
This simultaneous protest, though, is not without its critics–some cite the Anti-Defamation League’s advice to just ignore them as the best way to handle the situation.
And, of course, there are plenty of other options(see the video)…or just make fun of them. If someone would go ahead and make an anti- “God Hates Fags” sign that says “God Loves Boggle,” I will be satisfied.

I like the idea to convince Sigma Nu to use their sound system to throw an epic dance party at the same time. And then hand out OJ, bagels, and lox. And then get the Columbae kids to run through naked for added effect.

Westboroites always go out of their way to provide Christians with a perfect example of what not to do, and how not to be. They’re simply kook fringe extremists who take away from the validity of legitimate protests.

  3. Michael says:

These loser scammers are sickeningly exploitative of the legal system. Come up with the most frightening messages possible, then sue anyone who gets in their way.
Best response, to simply ignore them.

phelps and westboro should man up and be honest about being the anti-intellectuals they really are. Is really their core issue? no. They don’t have a cajones to protest what they are really against: education.
