Women’s Basketball Nabs Top Seed in NCAA Tourney

appelsp-stanford06_ph_0499996863.jpgAfter an impressive 31-1 season, Stanford’s women’s basketball team–ranked #2 in the nation–has unsurprisingly received one of the four top seeds for the upcoming NCAA tournament.
Stanford will first take on the barely-over-.500 UC-Riverside, which started the season with a record of 3-12, on Saturday. Assuming Stanford advances past their early-round foes at Maples Pavilion, the competition should heat up quickly: the number 2 seed in Stanford’s bracket, Texas A&M (#9 overall), or third-seeded Xavier (#5 overall) have both posted impressive records and could be formidable challenges.
The meaningless pre-tournament analysis is reassuring, though: all of the “experts” and 5 of the 6 “analysts” project Stanford to make it to the final four.
And while the men’s team did not make it to the tournament, studies have proven that college women’s basketball is better than men’s–or at least that they are better at graduating.
