NEW PHOTO CONTEST: Winter at Stanford

Thursday, March 7th, 2013

Mmmmocha!

EDIT:  updated (bigger!) prizes – see below!

Winter at Stanford evokes myriad images in our day to day lives.  From the sidewalk scrawlings of “regarde le ciel” (look at the sky), to the Barista art in the foam of your mocha, it’s often the little things that add spice and color to your day.

For this photo contest, we’re asking YOU to submit your favorite photos from this winter, be they artsy, fartsy, or just plain cool.  Whatever “winter” means to you, in this place, in this time, on however much caffeine you’ve been drinking, email it to stanfordblogging@gmail.com.

The stakes:  $30 $50 gift card to the overall winner: choice of Ike’s, Starbucks or Amazon!  $15 $25 gift cards to the three honorable mentions (same choice).  And if you’re awesome enough, we’ll just add more prizes.  Because we can.  The contest ends on 3/22.

Thank you to Safemart for helping to make the Winter at Stanford contest on The Unofficial Stanford Blog possible. Whether it’s sipping hot chocolate at the CoHo in the Winter, playing Ultimate Frisbee at the Oval in the Spring, crunching leaves underfoot as you take a Fall stroll to Cantor or running around Lake Lag during the Summer, Stanford has a million things to offer. But at some point, most of us venture out of the Stanford bubble (at least for a few years).  Are you graduating this year and planning on sharing a house in Palo Alto with your draw mates while you work for the latest hot start-up?  Or perhaps you’ve got that investment banking job or Teach for America position that you’ve always wanted and will be moving to the Big Apple.  Wherever you end up post-graduation, Safemart has the home security solutions you’ll need to keep your new apartment or house secure.  Check out state-of-the-art Safemart alarm systems and related home security products today!

Alum Appearances in McSweeney’s

Wednesday, February 6th, 2013

While our rain dances have yet to lure former blogger-in-chief Josh back from the real world, we occasionally see gems of his writing in the likes of humor website McSweeney’s and CNN.

Whether you’re overwhelmed with bloggy nostalgia, seeking amusing procrastination mechanisms, or quantitatively contemplating the meaning of Valentine’s Day, you can check out his recent articles below:

Seen at the Career Fair….

Sunday, October 7th, 2012
  • “And you’re co-terming? Eeeexcellent! We wants it, my precioussss.”

company representatives walking around in the crowd, whispering, “CS… we want you…” looking for CS majors like drug dealers while panting in their pantsuits.

  • free T-shirts everywhere you go.  You can fill an entire wardrobe just at the Career Fair.
  • lots of startups whose names abused the English language that couldn’t explain what they did
  • massive line for Microsoft
  • free wine-tasting trips to Napa as the top freebie
  • General Motors handing out Detroit chocolate to convince you Detroit is a nice place
  • Palantir’s orange earbuds
  • Wait, there’s a CS career fair tomorrow?  So what was today?
  • Business casual is masochistic.
  • SpaceX was the most popular table.  Don’t understand why?  Sheesh, it’s not like it’s rocket science.
  • McKinsey had a table despite having resume drop before the career fair.
  • Seniors suffered peer pressure to go to the fair.  EVERYONE ELSE IS DOING IT, MAN.
  • Nobody knows what consulting is.
  • Applications to Stanford grad schools sharply increasing.
  • Abundant coughing after FMOTQ.

And the winner is…

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

Sophomore Jonathan P.’s awesome procrastination nation picture received the most reader votes. He will receive the last of our much sought after Amazon.com gift cards. The photo was taken with his new ultra-wide lens and came out beautifully. Jonathan’s best procrastination advice: lie down, close your eyes and listen to Pandora for a while. You’ll either get a much needed nap or gain energy from simply relaxing for a few minutes.

Keep an eye out for upcoming TUSB contests! Thanks to all who sent in submissions and voted.

TUSB Photo Contest Winners – Vote!

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

Congratulations to Joshua W., the staff-selected winner of TUSB’s Procrastination Nation photo contest! Joshua is a freshman who enjoys praising God and dabbles in online shopping, late-night eating, and singing obnoxiously. His best tip for procrastination: do something active! He snapped this photo on the roof of Durand while putting off writing a PWR paper.

Because we got so many fantastic submissions, we had a little trouble deciding on a second winner. That’s where you come in. Take a look at the photos below and vote for your favorite! There’s still one last Amazon gift card at stake.

Sometimes it’s necessary just to keep us from losing our minds. At TUSB, we are happy to offer you the chance to benefit from your time-wasting activities.

TUSB’s Facebook Contest Winners!

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

Well, folks, the buzzer has sounded and the fat lady has sung. Our inaugural TUSB contest — fan the blog on facebook and be entered to win — has ended, and we have selected, notified, and prized our winners.

Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) staring intently at TUSB to see when the next contest will be.

That’s right, winners (plural): we had such a strong response to the contest that we decided to double the odds and select two winners. We randomly chose from among those who were fans of the blog on facebook by the contest deadline. We want to thank all of our Facebook supporters — as well as our readers of all shapes and sizes — for reading the blog. We also want to encourage you to “like” us on Facebook if you have not done so already, and/or follow us on twitter and RSS — these are not just ego-boosters for us bloggers but great ways to stay connected and not miss out on any of the great content.

Without further ado, our contest winners are:

Robbie S. and Gigi G!

Each of them has earned the $30 Amazon gift card prize. Congratulations to our winners! Stay tuned for our next contest, and keep reading and contributing to the blog.

TUSB Contest: Fanning our Fame

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Welcome everyone to the 2010-2011 academic school year! This school year stands to improve on all previous ones, mainly by tying for the most 1’s in the year since that great class of 1911. Being a ragtag bunch of students, we bloggers are just as pumped up about it and wanted to reward all of you fine readers for your loyalty in putting together our first of hopefully many contests. It’s simple: become a fan of us on facebook, and we’ll hold a drawing in 2 weeks for a $30 Amazon gift card to give to a random fan.

Like us on Facebook and get a chance to win money. Not too shabby.

Okay, we admit it: we’re mainly interested in increasing the number of fans we have on facebook. But we still care about our loyal readers who go above and beyond clicking a button on facebook and actually read our contest. Hence, we’ll let you in on a scheme to increase your personal chance for benefitting from this contest*. It’s fairly simple:

  1. Become a facebook fan yourself if you aren’t already.
  2. Tell all of your friends that you know a get-rich-quick scheme but that you only want a small part of it (say, half of it).
  3. When they agree, suggest that they become a fan of us on facebook.
  4. Point them to this post so that they also do the same thing

Now you might be thinking, “Please, Kevin, I’m not a sucker for a pyramid scheme.” But it’s not! Technically, this idea is NOT based on the contributions of those who join down the line: the prize is a fixed amount. Besides, we like to think of it as “multi-level marketing,” or so wikipedia calls it. I’m simply offering a method of maximizing gains.

Anyways, back to important things**. Details on the contest follow:

  • The prize is a $30 gift card to amazon.com. We will contact the winner via email or facebook or somehow.
  • The deadline is Thursday, October 7th, 10PM. Or roughly around there. It’s whenever we get around to pulling down the list of fans, which will be sometime that night
  • The winner will be picked almost entirely randomly from all facebook fans. I say almost because we need to exclude our staff from potential winners. What that does mean is that stanford student or not, undergrad or not, the rest of you are all eligible.
  • I don’t think it’s really possible for one to have multiple facebook accounts, but if we think that you somehow are trying to game it that or any other way, we’ll frown heavily upon and potentially act accordingly.
  • If you have any questions about the contest, contact us at stanfordblogging@gmail.com . I have never done anything like this before, so hopefully I’m not forgetting anything really important. I will update this page with any important details as they come up

If you missed the link, here it is again, and to the right sidebar in 2 places. Good luck, and visit us at the activities fair tomorrow!

* please don’t take this seriously. Except for the part about suggesting to your friends that they become fans

** you can pay attention again

(Edit: it’s $30. That was a bad typo)

TUSB’s Tidbits for Flourishing Frosh

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

We here at TUSB consider ourselves generally kind and charitable folk. Because of our (or at least, my) narrow worldview, the people we consider in need of help from our blog are the newest members of The Farm, the class of ’14. After extensive deliberating, we decided to compile a list of advice from all of our writers on how to improve your experience here at Stanford. For upperclassmen and alums, feel free to add more advice in the comments. For the frosh, listen up! You’ll learn far more through experience, but keep these tips in mind.

Blogger Profiles Are Here!

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Hey everyone,
So, a lot of people have been asking us to post profiles of some of the Stanford bloggers, obviously because of our witty, accessible writing. While we didn’t want to impose a mandatory rule, several bloggers responded to our call for profiles.
Right now, we’ve got 13 of our 40+ bloggers — and they’ve included portraits, websites, and tons of YouTube videos. Come and say hi.
