Making The Most of Your Internship

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Well everyone, it’s summertime.  While I’d love to say that summertime means frolicking in the sunshine, juicy watermelon, lazy days by the pool, and the beginnings of sweet summer love,  the truth is that for many of us it really means cramped cubicles and long days where the only budding relationship being formed is with the copy machine down the hall.

I’m not complaining though – for many of us these jobs will be the stepping stone to employment post-graduation (that’s the dream anyway).  In this competitive job market, we should consider ourselves lucky to even be employed.  But I’m not here to spout off from my soap box.  Because there is a bigger issue at hand: what to do when you have nothing to do?

Maybe you are an i-banking intern and that notion of nothing to do isn’t registering with you.  So let me explain.  As an intern, you often don’t know the ins-and-outs of the business, so there is only so much you can really contribute to the company.  Bosses often find themselves struggling to find assignments to keep you busy, and consequently you end up with a fair amount of free time to twiddle your thumbs and watch the minutes slowly tick by.  But rather than resorting to the rather cliche ways to stave off boredom – gchat, facebook, etc – why not indulge in some more inventive ways to enrich (read: waste) your time on the job.  In the spirit of summer, here are a few suggestions:

  • Make rap videos
  • Sporcle (classic and educational)
  • Teach yourself Origami (let’s face it, you’ve got easy access to a lot of printer paper)
  • Lat squeezes, glute clenches, ankle rolls (disclaimer: some of these activities are discouraged depending on the visibility of your cubicle/desk)
  • Improve your typing skills (just think – the quicker you finish your assignments, the more time you can funnel back into your newly-acquired Sporcle and origami addictions)
  • Find the most visually-offensive font for your resume (also: update your resume so it includes your shiny, muy impressionante internship from this summer)
  • Start planning your course load for fall quarter (although I regret to inform you that the 2010-2011 Bulletin will not be available until August 1)
  • Rediscover your love of Snood
  • Make paperclip jewelry

This girl knows how to rock a paper clip

  • Write a “bucket list” for the upcoming school year (you know it’ll fly by)
  • Learn how to unwrap a starburst using only your tongue (please reference the aforementioned disclaimer concerning cubicle visibility)
  • Learn Elvish
  • Write your personal memoir
  • Watch the new Harry Potter trailer on repeat
  • Read The Unofficial Stanford Blog
